Facebook is now testing a new start rating system for pages on the desktop version of its service according to a report from TechCrunch. The feature has been turned on for a small section of users, a move that the social network often uses to test out changes and new features.
"We're extending star ratings on Facebook from mobile to desktop - to make it easier for people to discover great businesses around them. This is beneficial for both businesses and consumers," Facebook said in a statement.
"Star ratings encourage more people to rate a business, making it eligible to appear in News Feed and help others discover a business they didn't know about previously. For businesses themselves, this also leads to greater brand awareness."
It is worth noting that this is not really a new feature. The social network has been allowing its users to rate businesses since early 2012, however, the ratings have never been put up on display until now.
So how will this change impact users? Up until now by liking a page, users simply endorsed or expressed their interest. However, with the new rating system, users will have an opportunity to express their opinion of the page in terms of a rating.
This new feature will facilitate a considerable shift in how businesses use Facebook.
