Very limited stocks of the iPhone 5S had been made available initially. This is likely to continue for another couple of weeks.
"I received only 5 units of the iPhone 5S, excluding Gold, which sold out instantly. Customers walking in are mostly enquiring about the Gold variant and returning empty handed," said Manish Khatri of Mahesh Telecom, Mumbai.
The situation is the same at Apple authorized resellers. FutureWorld at Connaught Place had received close to 70 units of the iPhone 5S, including all three colours, in three batches over five days. They are expecting to receive a handful of units every second day. But they are not committing to the customer.
Apple fans have the option of turning to grey markets. The iPhone 5S is still available at a slight premium in popular gray markets such as Gaffar in New Delhi and Heera Panna in Mumbai.
The iPhone 5S Gold 16 GB is available at a premium of Rs 6,000 for Rs 59,500 in Delhi's Gaffar Market. The 32GB Gold variant is retailing for Rs 66,000. The 64GB isn't moving and can be purchased for Rs 72,000.
Shopkeepers in Mumbai are charging a premium of around Rs 3,000 on the 64GB variant for Rs 71,500.
The iPhone 5S 16GB (silver and space grey variants) are available below the maximum retail price at Rs 52,000. But in the grey market, the customer will not receive a receipt acknowledging the purchase. Hence, the iPhones will not be eligible for service at Apple authorised service centers.
The iPhone 5C can be purchased from authorised resellers although the iPhone 5C pink variant is sold out at all resellers. The white, green, blue and yellow variants are available. It starts at a price of Rs 41,900 for 16GB version, which can be negotiated for and purchased for Rs 30,000 in the grey market.
