Google's Android operating system (OS) has for the first time accounted for over 80 per cent of all smartphone units shipped, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. With 211.6 million smartphone units shipped during the third quarter of 2013, Android accounted for 81 per cent of of all shipments as the smartphone segment grew 39.9 per cent year-over-year in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's Windows Phone OS continued its good show with a 156 per cent year over year growth, mostly backed by Nokia. The OS now accounts for 3.6 per cent market share with 9.5 million units during the period.

"Android and Windows Phone continued to make significant strides in the third quarter. Despite their differences in market share, they both have one important factor behind their success: price," Ramon Llamas, Research Manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team, said in a release. While Apple's iPhones are available on from the mid price segment, these two platforms  are available at the entry segment too. In fact, the prices of Windows Phones are expected to come down more with smaller players like Micromax expected to offer devices in the near future. This quarter, Nokia accounted for 93.2% of all the Windows Phone-powered smartphones shipped.

While Apple's iOS saw total volumes reaching record level its market share declined in the third quarter, mostly because people where waiting for the new devices to be launched. However, things could look up once the figures from the new iOS 7 devices are taken into account next quarter.

BlackBerry recorded the largest year-over-year decline among the leading operating systems with shipments falling to 4.5 million, a drop over over 41 per cent year over year.
