$350 Qualcomm Toq Smartwatch Lands Dec. 2 - PC Magazine

Qualcomm Toq

Qualcomm will join the wearable market next month with the Dec. 2 debut of its Toq smartwatch.

Pronounced "talk," the wrist-worn gadget boasts an always-on experience with multiple-day battery life and the illuminating Mirasol display technology, an always-on, always-visible reflective display that uses ambient light to allow for clear viewing even in bright sunlight. Similar to e-ink, Mirasol doesn't use any power while updating.

The Toq will set you back $349.99, but it will be a limited-edition release, with Qualcomm making only "tens of thousands" of Toqs. "The Toq smartwatch showcases key Qualcomm innovations … that will define the emerging wearable category," CEO Paul E. Jacobs said in a statement.

Back in September, Qualcomm told VR-Zone that it wasn't trying to compete in the smartwatch space, but instead developed the Toq in order to showcase Mirasol and wireless recharging.

The Toq uses Qualcomm WiPower LE technology. The "drop and go" charging base eliminates the need for wires and plugs and an available outlet, and instead lets users display the smartwatch as it rejuvenates. An optional pair of wireless headsets also uses the same charger.

Using Bluetooth technology, Toq allows Android owners to accept or reject phone calls, view text messages, and receive notifications directly on their wrist, without touching their smartphone. The watch, which requires Android 4.0.3 (though 4.3 Jelly Bean is preferred), also comes preloaded with weather and stock apps.

"Like a traditional watch, Toq displays information at a glance with no on/off switch. And paired with a smartphone to receive notifications and content, it allows the watch to seamlessly merge our physical and digital lives," Jacobs said. "Leveraging these and other industry-leading technologies, we and our partners will enable new product opportunities and consumer experiences."
