Apple's iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are coming to India on 1 November. The prices of the smartphones have also been revealed and Apple hasn't given up on the premium tag as far as iPhone's India pricing is concerned. For those of you who were hoping for an under 40k iPhone 5c, prepare to be disappointed.
The iPhone 5c, Apple's supposed 'cheaper' iPhone starts at Rs 41,900 for the 16GB model while the 32 GB model is priced at Rs 53,500. iPhone 5s starts at 54,000 for the 16 GB model, Rs 62,500 for the 32GB model and Rs 71,500 for the 64GB model.
With this kind of pricing, the iPhone is clearly the most expensive smartphone to be launched in India in recent times. The Galaxy Note III and the Nokia Lumia 1020 are second in the list with a price of close to Rs 50,000. The Note 3 however is available online for a price for Rs 46,899, while the Lumia 1020 is retailing online in the Rs 46,000 range as well. With the iPhone 5s or 5c, expecting a sudden price drop would have been too much, given that Apple's iPhone 4s, which is a two year-old smartphone is still retailing for Rs 38,000. As far as the iPhone 5 is concerned, it will be discontinued once the iPhone 5s and 5c are out, so if you were considering getting a premium Apple phone for less than Rs 50,000, you should try and get it as soon as possible.
There's also a good chance that Apple will launch the iPhone 5s and 5c with EMI schemes like it did with the iPhone 5, but given the higher pricing of the iPhone 5s, your monthly instalments are likely to be higher. On the other hand, the iPhone 5c instalments could come close to the amount that was charged for iPhone 5 (around Rs 4600 per month for a 6-month EMI scheme), give that the price is closer to the iPhone 5′s price range.

So which iPhone should you consider, if you indeed have Rs 50,000 to and more to burn? If budget isn't an issue and you want premium build, the iPhone 5s is the way to go.
The iPhone 5s has a 4-inch screen with Retina Display, 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, and a dual-core processor. The phone is powered by an A7 chipset – based on 64-bit PC architecture. There's a co-processor called M7 for motion sensing activities, and don't let the words dual-core fool you here. The iPhone 5s is blowing away the competition when it comes to speed.
AnandTech, which did a detailed review of the iPhone 5s says the smartphone's new A7 chip with its 64-bit architecture is easily the fastest. According to the post, The dual-core A7 is now the fastest SoC we've tested under SunSpider, even outpacing Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 and ARM's Cortex A15. The iPhone 5s beat the competition in almost every other benchmark test as well.
As for camera, 8 megapixels might not sound too appealing but the iPhone 5s has a f/2.2 aperture and a new, larger sensor which Apple says is 15 percent bigger than the previous iPhone 5 version.
A bigger sensor means that the quality of the picture improves in low light. iPhone 5s also supports OpenGL ES 3.0 for graphics. This allows better reflections and lens flares. It also offers better photo-realism for gaming. Which means that users can see details such as skin texture, shadows, etc in games.
The iPhone 5s' other big USP is the fingerprint scanner. Apple says that your fingerprint is not stored in the iCloud or Apple's servers but are encrypted and stored in the Secure Enclave inside the A7 chip on the iPhone 5s. However German hackers have already cracked Apple iPhone 5s' fingerprint scanner or what Apple is calling the TouchID. The Chaos Computing Club (CCC) posted a video on their website showing how an iPhone 5s could be accessed with a fabricated print. More on that here.
As far as the iPhone 5c goes, it is essentially the same as the iPhone 5 except that it has a poly-carbonate shell and is available in more colours. The iPhone 5c has 1 GB RAM, a dual-core A6 chip, 8 megapixel rear camera and 4-inch Retina Display screen. While the sound of plastic shell might make it seem like the phone's quality has suffered, most reviewers have said the phone still feels like a premium build. If you are bored of Black and White iPhones and want some colour in your life and don't mind plastic, the iPhone 5c is a good choice.
Of course both choices depend on how loyal an Apple fan you are and whether you have a budget that is north of Rs 40,000.
