Pegatron Corp, a major Taiwanese manufacturer of Apple's new phone, had their iPhone 5C orders reduced by less than 20 percent, the source told Reuters.
Apple began selling the iPhone 5C, a cheaper alternative to the iPhone 5S, in September in 11 markets including China and the U.S.
The company's first lower cost smartphone initially sold well as demand was particularly for a gold-coloured version.
The model retails at only $100 (£62) less than the premium model, which has faster chips and an inbuilt fingerprint sensor.
Last week Chinese website C Technology reported Apple had halved daily production of the iPhone 5c from 300,000 to 150,000.
It claimed that inside sources said sales of the handset had been disappointing, weeks after the brightly coloured handsets were launched.
Apple was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
