Mercedes-Benz plans to double production capacity at Chakan plant - Indian Express

Express News Service : Pune, Tue Aug 27 2013, 04:45 hrs Mercedes-Benz is planning to double its production capacity at its Chakan plan in view of the increased demand for the luxury car. Eberhard Kern, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes Benz, said the company would increase its capacity from 10,000 to 20,000. Kern said the company has a long-term investment plan of Rs 850 crore for India and the present expansion would be carried out from the same investment. As per the figures released by the company, Benz has sold 3,765 units in various variants from January to June. It has achieved a growth of 22 per cent in the present quarter as compared to 18 per cent in corresponding quarter last year. On Monday, Mercedes-Benz, India, also achieved the distinction to start the production of the second generation GL-Class full size luxury SUV, outside the SUV plant in Tuscaloosa in USA. Justifying the move to start production at Chakan plant, Kern said SUV market in India is poised for growth and the company is expecting to get fair share in the market. He, however, refused to divulge the market share of the company in the present market. The New GL-Class is 14.8 per cent more fuel efficient than its predecessor. The ECO start-stop feature reduces fuel consumption and emissions automatically by switching off the engine when the car is not moving in traffic. The V6 diesel has options like the AIRMATIC package for better ride control which helps in getting over the toughest of roads and worst terrains. The Active Parking feature helps the driver find a suitable space for parallel parking and to enter and leave parking spaces by active steering. With integrated PARKTRONIC, the vehicle can warn the driver of obstacles that are difficult to detect. The variant also has a sunroof that can be withdrawn. ... contd.
