Hyundai plans to drive in entry-level sedan - Times of India

The author has posted comments on this articlePankaj Doval, TNN | Aug 10, 2013, 01.04AM IST NEW DELHI: The entry sedan segment is set to see fresh competition with Hyundai, India's second-biggest car maker, planning to introduce a new car to take on segment heavyweights like Maruti Dzire and Honda Amaze. The model will be under four meters in length and comply with other technical requirements that would help the car attract lower excise duty. Hyundai has tasted success in the premium segment with models like Accent and Elantra. But, it does not have an entry-level sedan, though it's a promising segment. The company had been selling the dated Accent model for a long time, which has been phased out now as the model had been struggling for long after entry of newer and contemporary models. Sources said Hyundai plans to develop the new car on the platform of the i10 Grand, the new compact that the company will drive in next month. The platform of the Grand is new and the Indian R&D team of Hyundai has contributed heavily in the development of this model. The sources said the company can also consider the platform of the i20 compact, and even the i10. "However, it may most likely be developed on the i10 Grand platform," a source said. Interestingly, both Maruti Dzire and Honda Amaze have been developed on the platform of smaller compacts that the companies were selling initially. The Swift platform has given birth to the Dzire, while the Amaze is a creation from Honda's Brio platform. The new car from Hyundai, however, will not hit the market anytime soon, and may take over one year before it makes a debut. When contacted, Rakesh Srivastava, senior VP at Hyundai India, confirmed that the company is looking at the entry sedan segment. "The under-four-meter sedan segment is very attractive. It holds volumes and is growing at a fast pace. It does interest us to consider a product here," he told TOI.
