Breaking Down the Moto X Tech Specs - Wall Street Journal

Motorola 's Moto X is a high-end phone, but not everything about it is high end. Here's the rundown on the specs and where they stack up to the competition: Operating System – Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) This is the same as you get with the Samsung Galaxy S4 that launched in April. Google announced an Android update, version 4.3, last week but you won't get it with the Moto X. Motorola said Thursday that the phone is running a pretty pure version of Android and it hopes to get software updates quickly, avoiding the delays seen at some other handset makers. Screen – 1280 x 720 at 316 pixels per inch; 4.7-inch active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED). This doesn't quite match up to some others out there. The Galaxy S4 has 5-inch AMOLED screen with a 1920 X 1080 display and 441 pixels per inch. The iPhone is a bit closer to the Moto X with its 4-inch, 1136 X 640 display but tops the Moto X at 326 pixels per inch. Camera – 10 MP This falls short of the S4's 13 megapixel camera but tops Apple's 8 megapixel version. It's an odd gap considering many manufacturers are touting camera superiority. Nokia just introduced a 41-megapixel device. Motorola does claim some technical advances: The Moto X includes an RGB sensor that is used in dedicated cameras but hasn't yet been used in a phones, the company said. It also includes extra set of white pixels to collect more light. Storage – 16 GB The Moto X comes in at 16 gigabytes, with an option to pay $50 more for a 32-gigabyte version at AT&T . This is less flexibility than competitors; the S4 and iPhone come in 16, 32 and 64 gigabyte models. In fact, the S4 has a microSD slot to add up to another 64 gigabytes of storage. That said, Motorola is giving users two years of free access to 50 GB of storage in the cloud through Google Drive, on top of the standard 15 GB that Drive users get for free. Processor: Dual core, 1.7Ghz The Moto X uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro, a dual-core chip running at 1.7 gigaherz. The speed is slightly higher than most competitors, while the dual-core structure puts it on par with the iPhone 5 and most others. The Galaxy S4, though, has a quad-core chip and runs at 1.9 Ghz when using a Qualcomm chip. Price – $199 This part is high end. The Moto X will cost $199 with a two-year contract, on par with other expensive rivals. A Motorola spokeswoman didn't have the full retail price of the phone, which will be important to T-Mobile users that generally pay full price without signing a service contract. The phone will be available in late August or early September, depending on the carrier. It will be available on AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular.
