NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel is likely to launch 4G telecommunication services in the Delhi service area either by end of this year or early next year, a person familiar with the matter said. The 4G technology allows users to watch videos and download content on mobile devices much faster than third-generation, or 3G, networks. Services under 4G, however, are at their infancy in India which is starting to see a pickup in the usage of 3G services. China's telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies is handling the 4G network roll-out for Bharti Airtel in Delhi, another person involved in the matter said. Delhi, a lucrative service area with high-paying customers, would be the fifth city Bharti Airtel would be launching its 4G services in after Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune and Chandigarh. The company in 2010 won broadband wireless licences in the four service areas of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kolkata and Punjab. Additionally in May 2012, it bought 49% stakes each in four entities holding US chipmaker Qualcomm Inc's wireless broadband licences in the Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala circles.
