After over months of rumors, suggesting Daimler and Aston Martin are in talks (again) for a 'technical partnership', an official announcement from the latter, announcing that it has signed a 'Letter of Intent' with Mercedes Benz' high performance AMG division for has finally put the speculations to rest.
The deal will now allow the British automaker to 'access significant Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Mercedes Benz Cars' resources.' Specifically, the partnership will focus on V8 engine development and give Aston Martin access to some of Mercedes Benz' electronic components. In return, Daimler AG would get a five per cent of non-voting shares in Aston Martin. Also SeeAston Martin would continue to produce all of its cars at its headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, it confirmed, but the deal would mean that its next generation of models would use electronics and engines that benefit from the superior resources of Mercedes-Benz.
The 'Letter of Intent' between Daimler and Aston Martin was signed yesterday and definitive agreements are expected to be signed by the end of 2013. Aston Martin product development director, Ian Minards said, "We have selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process. Aston Martin sources cutting edge technology from key suppliers around the globe and the opportunity to include content from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in our next generation sports cars is, clearly, good news."
He added, "Working with Mercedes-AMG in this way while, of course, remaining independent and preserving the unique character and style of Aston Martin that has been the mainstay of the company throughout its 100-year history, points to a very bright future for the company as it starts its second century in business."
Ola Källenious, head of Mercedes-AMG, said: "This is proof of AMG's technological and performance expertise and a real win-win situation for both sides.
