Nokia looks up to replacement market for sales - mydigitalfc.com

Mobile handset maker Nokia, which earlier has lost its market share to rivals, is looking up to the replacement market for volumes on the back of launch of new models.

It is targeting Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000 price band, where 80 per cent of the mobile users are. Also, it is weaving apps with 2G internet connection in mind to serve the seemingly large number of customers in this price band.

This apart, it will work on a hyperlocal strategy to reach out the customers in smaller cities.

"Good camera, longer lasting battery, faster internet experience, sturdy design and ease of use rank high for the customers while buying a phone. Disappointments in any of these parameters with earlier phones will accelerate the decision to go for a replacement," TS Sridhar, regional general manager (south) Nokia India said.

Not long ago, a handset was used about 28 months but with new models coming regularly, their replacement has been reduced to a few months.

Nokia, as part of its efforts of to get back the volumes, is betting on made for India apps, he said adding that Nokia is working with mobile app developers to localise content for India through its Nokia Forum which has about a lakh registered developers in India. The Nokia App store currently has over 1.4 lakh apps.

A new operating system called Asha Software Platform has been developed, on which its latest entry level smart phone Asha 501, priced Rs 5,199, is based on. Feature phones are not dying yet and still are among the favourites for many, he said adding that it sold about 20 million units from its ASHA stable in 130 countries.

Cyber Media Research's India Monthly Mobile Handsets Market Review, April 2013, June 2013 ranked Nokia first in terms of market share (20.3 per cent), followed by Samsung (14.2 per cent) and Micromax third with 8.9 per cent.

A large number of feature phone users are migrating to entry-level smartphones and a significant proportion of these preferred to continue with a smartphone of the same brand, the report said.
