Nissan raised the curtains from the first model of its five door hatchback- Datsun Go, a product under the revived Datsun brand, the price of which is believed to be under Rs 4,00,000. The 1.2 liter model Datsun Go that is expected to be brought into the market and go on sale in the first quarter of 2014, would be giving a tough competition to Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. and Hyundai Motor Co. in India. However given the fact that Datsun is a comparatively lesser known brand in India, the company would have to push real hard to make it a household name. Speaking about the car on the unveiling ceremony, Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn said: "Datsun is back. The brand will "contribute significantly" to Nissan's growth in high-growth markets."
"The Datsun brand will help Nissan compete in the lowest price ranges in economies such as India, Russia and Indonesia, which account for about 40 percent of the market. We expect to introduce the Datsun in Indonesia, Russia and South Africa within two years. Datsun will target first-time buyers upgrading from motorcycles or used cars, allowing the automaker to reach a new market segment. Reviving the Datsun name, even if it's unfamiliar to consumers in emerging markets, beats starting a new brand," added the CEO.
