Jump in Facebook's UK mobile users paves way for summer advertising growth - Telegraph.co.uk

Mr Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder, introduced adverts on its mobile apps last year, and today, the company said it has seen a 22pc increase in the number of Britons visiting the social network on mobile phones in the last 12 months.

Shortly after its initial public offering in May 2012, Facebook's shares slumped on fears the company was not prepared for the shift in consumer behaviour.

However, Mr Zuckerberg moved quickly to focus on its mobile services, and almost a third of its $1.25bn (£820m) in advertising revenues in the first three months of the year were from mobile adverts. The figure is expected to be higher when the company reports second-quarter results next week.

"Historically, the summer's been a wasteland [for advertisers]," James Quarles, Facebook's head of UK sales, said, predicting that slow spending in other sectors would boost mobile sales. "A number of British advertisers recognise it's a mobile first world," he said, and added that "we continue to experiment and innovate" with new types of adverts.

Enders Analysis, a research firm, says that 26m of Facebook's 33m UK users now access it via mobiles.

Pimms – which launched a campaign around Wimbledon – and Cornetto are among the brands which claim to have found success by using Facebook's mobile adverts.
