New Delhi, July 24: General Motors India will recall 1.14 lakh units of its multi-purpose vehicle Chevrolet Tavera, manufactured between 2005 and 2013, to address emission and specification issues. The company has informed government authorities about an emissions glitch involving the Tavera (Bharat Standard (BS) III) and of the Tavera BSIV not meeting certain specifications. "General Motors India (GMI) is voluntarily recalling the Chevrolet Tavera BS3 (2.5L variant) and BS4 (2.0L variant) from model years 2005-2013 to address emission and specification issues," the company added. The affected vehicles will be repaired free of charge at GMI's 280 dealers all over the country. The road ministry has formed a panel to probe the matter and investigate General Motors India for any violation of emission norms. They will decide if any penal action will be taken against the company. "The committee will find out how it happened when there are standard emission norms specified in detail by the government," a ministry official said. General Motors stopped production and sale of the Tavera BSIII on June 4 and the Tavera BSIV on July 2 this year. The issues are not safety-related, the company added. The car maker said it had identified a solution to the issues and performed the required engineering validation and was awaiting regulatory approvals. "After the proposed solution receives approval from authorities, General Motors will resume Tavera production and sale, and move forward with its recall and customer notification plan for both the BSIII and BSIV models," the company said. GM said it would notify customers on how and when to bring in their vehicles. Commenting on the recall, GMI president and managing director Lowell Paddock said, "Our customers are at the centre of everything we do. Exceeding their expectations begins with designing, building and selling the world's best vehicles that endure over time." The industry had come out with a voluntary recall policy in June last year; since then, about 2 lakh units have been recalled, most of them being two-wheelers. Prior to the Tavera, the largest recall was done by Maruti in 2010 when it recalled one lakh units of the A-Star to rectify faulty fuel pumps. Recently, Ford had recalled 972 EcoSports, its recently launched compact SUV model. ![]() via Technology - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNGAxJd122Cp92t0dpE8axv_v58t4A&url=http://www.telegraphindia.com/1130725/jsp/business/story_17154573.jsp | |||
