NEW DELHI—General Motors Co. is recalling 114,000 Chevrolet Tavera sport-utility vehicles in India to fix issues relating to emission standards and other government specifications in one of the country's largest auto recalls ever. GM India also suspended the production of the Tavera, one of its largest-selling models in India, until it resolves the issues for which the company said it has found a solution. It is awaiting regulatory approvals for the solution, the company said Wednesday. The Bharat Stage-3 version of the Tavera had an emissions-related issue, while the Bharat Stage-4 version had an issue meeting certain specifications, it said. The company didn't elaborate on the problems, but said they don't pose any safety risks. India's Bharat Stage-3 and 4 standards are equivalent to the Euro-3 and 4 emission specifications. India implemented the stricter Bharat Stage-4 standards for passenger vehicles in 13 major cities in April 2010. The Bharat Stage-3 standards are in force in rest of India since October 2010. GM India said it stopped production and sale of Tavera's 2.5-liter diesel-engine Bharat Stage-3 version and 2.0-liter diesel-engine Bharat Stage-4 variant. "After the proposed solution receives approval from authorities, General Motors India will resume Tavera production and sale, and move forward with its recall and customer notification plan for both the BS3 and BS4 models," the company said. Several auto makers in India including Ford Motor Co., Honda Motor Co., Yamaha Motor Co. and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. have announced voluntarily recalls of vehicles in the past year. The recalls follow the adoption of a "voluntary code on vehicle recall" by the local association of auto makers in July last year. Earlier this month, Ford India recalled 972 diesel-engine EcoSport SUVs, and last week, Yamaha Motor Co. said it would recall 56,082 Ray scooters in India. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the country's largest car maker by sales, had in 2010 announced the recall of 100,000 A-Star hatchbacks. The other vehicle models that are produced by GM India under the Chevrolet brand include the Spark and Beat hatchbacks and Enjoy multipurpose vehicle. ![]() via Technology - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNG2m0tod2rZTmkdDAOnDBgP_rWnMQ&url=http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324110404578625500571971238.html | |||
