The strike at Bajaj Auto may spread to other parts of the Pune-Pimpri industrial belt as workers in this geography have threatened to go on a mass strike in support of the bike major's employees. The 11-day old strike at Chakan continues with workers insistent on their demands, while the management said it will have a limited impact on production. According to the company, on Friday, around 550 workers reported to work. So, the company will produce 1,450 vehicles at Chakan. "At the Waluj plant, Friday is a weekly off, so from Saturday, we will be producing 800 Pulsars. 70-75% of our requirement of all brands of the Pulsar, Avenger, KTM is achieved," the company said. Meantime, unhappy with the Bajaj management's response so far, the Vishwa Kalyan Kamgar Sanghatana along with Shramik Ekta Mahasangh, which claims to represent 88 trade unions in the region, will take a decision on mass stoppage of work across the region. Bajaj Auto has already approached the Pune industrial court seeking to get the stir declared illegal. The Shramik Ekta Mahasangh, which has almost 25,000 workers under its umbrella, in a letter to the Upper Labour Commissioner of Pune, has asked it to intervene in the issue. According to Keshav Gholave, general secretary, Shramik Ekta Mahasangh, the Labour Commissioner is not looking to investigate the matter. "They have not given any importance to same. Hence we have decided to go for a stoppage of work." A decision on this is expected on Sunday. Tata Motors, Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz have plants in this region. "In Manesar, workers were given a hike in wages only after an agitation by Maruti Suzuki. But we will have a peaceful strike in support of employees of Bajaj Auto," said Gholave. According to analysts tracking Bajaj Auto, the strike will have limited impact on the overall profitability of the company as it has already managed to shift some production to its Waluj plant. Chakan is the most profitable plant for the company producing premium bikes like Pulsar, KTM and Avenger.
