Apple celebrates 5th anniversary of App Store - CBS News

Looking to toss together a gourmet dinner? How about mixing tracks like a professional DJ? This week, you can learn it all for free, thanks to the 5th anniversary of the App Store. Apple is ringing in the milestone by giving away free games and apps.

Throughout the week, users can download five apps and five games for free. "Barefoot World Atlas" teaches users about the world through an interactive globe; "Day One" offers a place to journal; "How to Cook Everything;" "Over," and "Traktor DJ for iPhone" round out the free apps. The games are "Badland," "Infinity Blade II," "Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery EP," "Tiny Wings" and "Where's My Water?"

Since launching on July 10, 2008, the App Store's inventory has grown from 500 to more than 900,000. Along with the free games and apps, Apple offers a look back at several App Store milestones. Users downloaded more than 10 million apps in the mobile market's opening weekend. Facebook was the most downloaded app of that first year, clocking nearly 5 million downloads. "Angry Birds" arrived in 2010, while Conde Nast launched the first magazine app in 2011. By 2012, more than 25 billion apps had been downloaded.
