Samsung Electronics Co. launched yet another variation of its Galaxy S4 smartphone barely a week after introducing the Galaxy S4 Active, suggesting the world's largest smartphone company by shipments aims to mobilize a wider range of products to battle concerns about lower-than-expected shipments in the third quarter. In its latest addition to the crowded line-up of Galaxy phones Samsung on Wednesday announced the 'Galaxy S4 zoom,' which comes with a 16-megapixel camera with a 10-times optical zoom lens that makes it look like a phone from the front and a digital camera from the back. The Galaxy S4 zoom runs on a slightly slower processor than the standard Galaxy S4 phone and has 4.3-inch screen, a tad smaller than the flagship phone's 5-inch screen. Like the Galaxy Camera launched last year, the Galaxy S4 zoom's camera produces high-resolution pictures. Although it has a less-powerful zoom lens, it allows users to make phone calls. Despite the Galaxy S4 zoom's hybrid features, analysts said they don't expect sales for this product to zoom into the millions. "It's a niche market product," says C.W. Chung, an analyst with Nomura research. But "consumer needs for a differentiated product is rising and the market will be divided into players that can deliver such items and those that can't. This product is the type of thing that only a company with economy of scale can do." Samsung shares have been falling for five consecutive sessions, shedding 10.1% to 1,385,000 won ($1,222) as of Wednesday and losing $20.2 billion of market value. Investors are getting edgy about Samsung's weakening share price, and are wondering whether the slump will become as steep Apple Inc. 's earlier this year. But analysts were less concerned–they say Samsung's ability to deliver a wide range of products will help it remain competitive. Although the concept of a digital camera and phone hybrid is more than 10 years old, it may be new to consumers accustomed to cameras playing second fiddle to a smartphone's functions. Samsung didn't disclose pricing details. ![]() via Technology - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNEwL0kLf68Cdgnh6W0d9dRn0PYk1w&url=http://stream.wsj.com/story/latest-headlines/SS-2-63399/SS-2-252460/ | |||
