Honda to recall more than 143000 Fits for potential fire risk - Los Angeles Times

Honda announced late Friday that it would be recalling more than 143,000 of its compact Fit hatchback cars to correct an issue with the window switch that could lead to a fire. The automaker said it was voluntarily recalling 143,083 Honda Fits from the 2007 and 2008 model years. At issue is the master power window switch that may be exposed to water or other liquids. Over time, Honda said this could cause the switch to overheat, melt and possibly start a fire. Honda said no accidents or injuries have occurred as a result of this problem. The recall is the second of its type for these particular Honda Fit models since January 2010 to correct the same issue. That initial recall "has since been determined by Honda not to be sufficiently robust" enough, according to a statement released by Honda on Friday. Therefore, Honda is asking all owners of 2007 and 2008 Fit models to bring their cars to a dealer for inspection, regardless of whether the vehicle w as involved in the 2010 recall. Any necessary repairs will be made free of charge. Affected customers will be notified by mail in mid-July.
