Workers protest police lathicharge on Maruti staff - Hindustan Times

More than 30 worker unions of the Gurgaon-Manesar-Bawal auto belt staged a demonstration on Monday to protest the police lathicharge on sacked employees of the Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) on May 19.

Backed by trade unions, nearly 200 representatives of the workers' unions submitted a memorandum to Haryana chief minister through Gurgaon deputy commissioner PC Meena at his office.

They demanded that charges be dropped against the 100-odd Maruti workers against whom the Kaithal district police have lodged cases for violating Article 144.

The workers had been holding a peaceful dharna at the Mini Secretariat in Kaithal since March 24, demanding release of 147 workers for indulging in violence at the automaker's Manesar plant in July 2012.

The police had used water cannons and cane-charged agitating workers to evict them from near the house of Haryana industries minister Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Production was halted for a month post the incident at the Manesar plant. Following this, Maruti had sacked 500 workers.

The Manesar plant had witnessed three such instances in 2011 too. Workers' union representatives from the major auto-manufacturers Maruti-Suzuki's Gurgaon plant, Suzuki Motorcycles, Honda Motors, Hero Motocorp and several others joined the protest.
