Microsoft's Xbox doesn't infringe Motorola patents, court rules - Inquirer

A UNITED STATES COURT has ruled that Microsoft's Xbox 360 games console doesn't infringe Motorola's patents and won't be blocked from entering the US.

Of course, we're not talking about the Xbox One here, as the ruling made on Thursday ends a case filed by Motorola Mobility in November 2010. The Google subsidiary alleged that Microsoft owes it around $4bn a year for use of the 802.11 wireless local area networking standard and its patented video coding technology.

According to Bloomberg, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled yesterday that the Xbox doesn't infringe Motorola's patents.

This follows a similar ruling by the ITC from March 2013, which the agency upheld on Thursday. It also follows an earlier ruling in Germany, where Google was told it cannot enforce a ban on the Xbox 360 console.

"This is a win for Xbox customers and confirms our view that Google had no grounds to block our products," Microsoft deputy general counsel David Howard said following the ruling.

Google, unsurprisingly, said it was disappointed by the ruling, adding that it is evaluating its next steps. In a likely scenario, Google will appeal the decision and take the case to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which specialises in patent cases.

This ruling comes at a good time for Microsoft, which earlier this week announced its next generation Xbox console, the Xbox One. This will be released in the UK in November, priced at around £400.

It's yet to be seen whether Google will file a patent lawsuit against Microsoft's upcoming games console. ยต
