The era of cheap car seems to have gone, as far as Indian car market is concerned. Maruti's DZire almost beats Alto and overwhelms Swift by a huge margin Mumbai: Alto has been the top selling car in the Indian market. And so far we firmly believed that only cheap cars sell in Indian market in largest numbers. But now we will have to change the perception that Indians love cheap cars. To be true, even a person who doesn't have the capacity to buy a decent car has started taking benefits of readily available financing from banks and even car manufacturers to go far either good hatch back or an entry level sedan instead of smaller cars that they believe are cheap looking and are not quite safe.
To be true, the cumulative April sales of DZire and Swift 35975 beat Maruti Alti by a really, really huge margin. The individual April sales of DZire and Swift stood at 19446 and 16530 respectively while Maruti Alto's sales stood at 19847. So people's perception that Indian consumers go for cheap cars is simply misplaced. This is the reason that Tata that were banking on the hope that their cheapest car will sell in millions are a disappointed lot as their Nano, the small 600 cc car failed to get any decent response in the market.
