It is a huge development for the country's space industry. India's first navigational satellite IRNSS-1 will give position accuracy better than 10 metres

When it comes to space exploration, India seems to be making strides. The way it has been developing its space prowess it seems that this South Asian nation is set to emerge as a very important player in the space industry in the next few years.

India is set to take a big step next month when it launches its first navigational satellite without the assistance of any other country, be it Russia or United States of America.

Two nations have been making fast progress in the field of space technology. And both are neighbors. Yes India and China have become important space players in the world. Though China has marched a bit fast, India is not far behind. India's moon mission was a huge success and now it is preparing to send its Mars mission pretty soon.

But while it is preparing to launch its first Mars mission, India is set to launch its first navigational satellite. The first Satellite of Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) constellation, IRNSS-1 is set to be launched by PSLV-C22 on 12 June. The new satellite will give the country more accurate data from closer than 10 meter. Reports suggest that IRNSS is an independent regional navigation satellite system, designed to provide position accuracy of better than 10 metres over India and the region extending about 1500 km around the country. IRNSS provides two basic services — standard positioning service for common civilian users and restricted service for special authorized users.

ISRO officials say that IRNSS-1 would be tested in orbit for three-four months once it's launched. ISRO has planned to have a constellation of seven satellites under IRNSS. The satellite will be launched on board PSLV-C22 XL at 1.01 am from Sriharikota spaceport on June 12. The satellite will give very accurate data not just within its borders but also over a large swathe of areas in its neighboring countries including Pakistan and China.  Reports suggest that 1425 kg IRNSS-1 will have a life span of as many as ten years.
