Express news service : Fri May 31 2013, 15:17 hrs ![]() ![]() ![]() Google Inc is celebrating 161st birth anniversary of German bacteriologist Julius Richard Petri with an animated doodle. His claim to fame is the by now ubiquitous Petri dish. Born on 31st May, 1852, Julius Richard Petri, studied medicine and later served as a physician in the army. Julius Richard Petri died on 20th May, 1921. Julius Richard Petri invented the crucial for research culture dish, which is also called the Petri plate. The importance of the invention lies in the fact that it is a necessary component of almost every research activity in the world. It is a bacteria culturing product made from algae which helps the medical fraternity to identify the specific bacteria responsible for a particular disease which in turn leads to development and dispensing of medicines for a successful cure – almost every cure can be put at the doorstep of Julius Richard Petri. In remembrance, Google Inc's doodle has featured 6 animated Petri dishes in which a rubber-gloved hand cultures different bacteria, which then keep growing. On a mouseover, each dish sprouts a smelly sock, a door knob, a PC keyboard, a dog, a cactus and a dish being cleaned – in effect showing what kind of bacteria thrive on these products and how they look on being cultured. For the world, Julius Richard Petri lives, through his invention. ALSO READTERMS OF USE: The views, opinions and comments posted are your, and are not endorsed by this website.
