Goan girl invents touch-free technology for smartphones - EE Times India

Indians at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed touch-free, gesture-recognition technology for mobile devices. 3dim – a startup founded by three MIT engineers (two of the co-founders are Indians) – walked away with the Rs.54.35 lakh ($1,00,000) top prize at this year's MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition.

Goa girl Andrea Colaco, the co-founder and CEO of 3dim, has invented 3D gesture-recognition technology — such as what's used in the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Kinect — to be implemented into devices such as smartphones, tablets, or Google Glass. This would allow users to interact with their devices through thin air, rather than having to touch a screen.

The technology reduces power requirements and eliminates sensitivity to lighting conditions, making "reliable gesture control on the go possible for the first time." "Leave your screen for display and interact in 3D. Gesture is the new touch."

"The need for power-hungry, specialised hardware has kept such technology from mobile devices — problems that 3dim has now rectified," Colaco, a PhD student at the MIT Media Lab.

With the prize money, 3dim will go "full steam ahead," Colaco said, further developing the technology for customers — namely, smart-device manufacturers — who have already expressed interest in the product.

The startup was one of the eight finalists that pitched business plans to a capacity crowd in Kresge Auditorium. A panel of entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, scientists and industry professionals chose 3dim based on the strength of the team's technology, business plan and presentation, said MIT.

The team has also patented their 3D gesture-recognition technology.
