Datawind announces Aakash 2 project completion - Indian Express

Datawind on Thursday announced the completion of 1 lakh Aakash low-cost computing access devices for IIT-Bombay.

''The Aakash 2 tablets, the world's lowest cost computing access device, have been delivered to IIT-Bombay with 12 months warranty and accessories at Rs 2,263... It's competitive tablets are available in Indian market for around Rs 5,000,'' the company said in an statement.

The device utilises multi-touch projective capacitive touch screens, manufactured at Datawind's touch-screen manufacturing facility in Amritsar. It is powered by a Cortex A8-1Ghz processor and contain 512 MB RAM. Flash memory of 4GB can be supplemented by up to 32GB through its micro-SD card slot.

Aakash 2 tablets also support external 3G and EVDO dongles for mobile broadband data connectivity. It is supported by Google's Android 4.0 operating system. Commercially the device is sold as the UbiSlate 7Ci.

IIT-Bombay's open source lab has developed a variety of applications for engineering students to utilise the Aakash2. These include 3-D modeling applications, C++ programming tools, distance learning and live assessment tools.

In addition to completion of the 1 lakh unit Aakash project, Datawind announced that that it has also completed deliveries of its pre-paid backlog.

The Aakash project was Kapil Sibal's brainchild when he was the HRD Minister. The idea is to provide low-cost computing device at subsidised rate to students so that they can access Internet for educational purposes. Canadian company DataWind had bagged a contract to produce the first and second versions of the Aakash tablet.
