Now that the government of India has certified the long awaited RE60 as India's first Quadricycle, Bajaj auto is gearing up to launch the vehicle in the near future. Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, confirms that the production of the RE60 will begin "very soon".

After undergoing the process of regulating various norms for this new breed of four-wheeler, the government has given the RE60 a go-ahead though only for commercial use. As per the regulations, the vehicle can be used for "intra-city transport within municipal limits", meaning it cannot be driven on the highways.

Given that the proposal for regulations were based on the norms set in Europe, the emission norms for the quadricycles sold in India will the same as those in Europe. Moreover, the government states that any change in the rules concerning quadricyles in Europe would have to be adopted in India within a period of six months from the date of implementation of the new rules.

First unveiled during the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi, the RE60 aims to set new standards in the commercial vehicle segment when it comes to fuel economy and emissions. In spite of such compact dimensions, the RE60's upright silhouette allows for a generous amount of room inside the cabin. The interior, much like the Tata Nano, is quite basic; the instrument cluster sits in the middle with a dash-mounted gear lever and storage bins on either side.

The RE60 is powered by a 200cc liquid-cooled, petrol engine. This single-cylinder engine churns out around 20PS of power. While the output sounds very little, the engine in fact doesn't have to carry around much weight as the RE60 is said to weigh well under 500kg. The top-speed is said to have been limited to 70kmph in interest of safety.
