Jugaad '13, the mean machine offering a mileage of 200 kmpl, may be an answer to the country's fuel problem.   After five months of hard work, the second year students of KJ Somaiya College unveiled their creation on Tuesday and looked proudly as Jugaad '13 zoomed past. "Looking at the fluctuating fuel prices in our country, we thought of making this prototype which is designed as frugally and inventively as it can get. Thus, the name Jugaad '13, inspired by the book Jugaad Innovation," says Tony Thomas, a student and the team leader. The motivation behind the car's conception is Shell Eco-Marathon, an international competition to be held on Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia, in July. KJ Somaiya College students have been shortlisted from Maharashtra among 12 Indian teams and from 150 teams across the world. The team of 40 students from electronic and mechanical engineering streams got together and divided their effort into technical and marketing. The students with no background whatsoever in marketing managed to rope in sponsors such as Yamaha, Nyasa and Om freights who will ship their prototype to Malaysia for free. The vehicle has been designed to make it as lightweight and aerodynamic as possible. It is also one of the few prototypes that uses an electronic fuel injection system, which is a big fuel-saver. "We need the car to be aerodynamic as majority of the fuel is saved when the car is coasting or able to glide without using the engine," said Kunal Jain, a member of the team. Petrol cars in India have a mileage of around 20 kmpl. The students said the car's mileage will be 300kmpl in the Malaysia circuit. "If we do well, we can think of turning it into a full-scale luxury car in the competition next year, but we're more keen on perfecting and improving on the prototype as it gives us more freedom to experiment," Thomas added.
