The Toyota Corolla Altis isn't exactly flying out of the showrooms and we reckon that the car can surely do with some more promoting by Toyota Kirloskar Motors. Toyota has now silently launched a new entry level model for the Altis in a bid to attract more lower-D segment car buyers. Christened as the Corolla Altis J (S), the new low end trim level is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The new trim level will replace the J trim level that is available on the petrol variant and will be positioned above the J trim level of the diesel variant. The new Toyota Corolla Altis J (S) gets dual airbags, a touchscreen music system, and USB compatibility over the J variant. Powering the India spec Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel is a 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine that has a max power output of 90PS. Compared to the diesel engines of the Chevrolet Cruze and the new Hyundai Elantra, the Altis diesel is pretty low on power. However, Toyota feels that high fuel efficiency and traditional Corolla strengths more than make up for the lower power delivery. The petrol variants of the Corolla Altis are powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine that has 140ps of peak power. Both the engines come mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The Toyota Corolla Altis J (S) petrol has a sticker price of INR 11.74 lakhs and the Corolla Altis Diesel J (S) goes on sale at a price of INR 13.16 lakh. (All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi).
