The latest innovation in television technology has been revealed, Smell-o-vision. A team from Tokyo University has invented a screen that makes a smell emanate from the spot on the screen showing the specific object. Researchers told Discovery News that the proposed model would have four fans on the four corners of the screen to generate air flow and direct it to the user. So a virtual odour could be shifted so that it appeared to emanate from an object on the screen. For example, if a piping-hot pizza appeared in the lower, right-hand corner of the screen, the fans would direct the scent to that specific region. At the moment the system can only make one smell at a time, but the researchers say the next stage is to include a cartridge like those used in printers to allow the smells to be changed more easily. According to newscientist.com The screen was shown at the IEEE Virtual Reality conference in Orlando, Florida, last week. The research team has suggested the invention could be used to enhance advertising. Copyright © 2013, Television New Zealand Limited.
