Such a scenario has become that much more difficult to achieve after today's decline. The stock's slump followed industry reports released Wednesday evening that showed PC shipments fell sharply in the first quarter. Research firm IDC said global shipments of laptops and desktops fell 14%, the biggest quarterly drop since the firm started tracking the data in 1994. Separate data from research firm Gartner also showed shipments slumped significantly. The negative news has hurt several players in the PC industry, including Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo. But Microsoft has been hit particularly hard after a pair of analyst downgrades this morning from Goldman Sachs and Nomura piled on to the negative news. Both firms warned that the continued trend of consumers gravitating toward tablets and away from PCs will represent another blow to Microsoft. Unlike PCs, tablets aren't dominated by Microsoft's operating system. That said, WSJ reported that Microsoft is developing a new lineup of its Surface tablets, including a 7-inch version expected to go into mass production later this year.
