dna digital: Sony Xperia Z—Getting wet and wild! - Daily News & Analysis

We've reached a point in the high-end smartphone space where number of cores and specifications just don't matter anymore. It's all about the user experience and some unique feature which differentiate it from the crowd. Sony has been getting very serious about the role they play in the smartphone segment and that showed with the barrage of phones it launched last year in every conceivable price bracket.

That continues with their latest flagship for 2013, the Xperia Z. This beast of a smartphone has all the trimmings of a flagship, along with a special sprinkle of IP55 and IP57 certification. Yes, for the first time, we have a high-end smartphone that's water-proof and dust-proof, which is the biggest attraction of the Xperia Z.

The 5-inch Full HD display is protected by a sturdy chassis which easily withstands bumps and bruises of everyday use. The glass front and back is protected by a thick screen protector which makes it shatter-proof. On the flip side, the waterproofing has diluted the colours of the screen and the colours aren't very rich or vibrant as compared to other IPS displays.

Sony uses their own custom skin on the Xperia Z which is very familiar if you've used previous Sony phones. The interface is quick and fluid and you won't find any lag or hiccups here. Media playback is also well catered for. Audio quality through the bundled headset is very good, but the same cannot be said about the speaker. It's only mono and while it's loud for alerts, the quality is not the best. The stock video player also supports AVI video files and does a good job at rendering HD content.

The Xperia Z is a quad-band 3G and GSM handset along with other niceties like Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth and GLONASS for speedy navigation. Call quality is good although the earpiece grill is a bit small so you need to hold it just right in order to hear clearly. The quad-core CPU tends to get quite hot during activities like gaming or GPS usage, which can get a little uncomfortable.

The 13MP camera onboard the Z manages good day time shots and even does HDR photos and videos. Low-light captures aren't the best however when you aren't using the flash. Battery life is strictly average but their STAMINA mode manages to get your through an entire day. For a street price of `38,000, it's currently one of the best high-end handsets money can buy.
