![]() YouTube on Wednesday announced a major achievement that only few sites on the Internet have reached — one billion monthly users. It took the Google-owned video-sharing site eight years to reach that milestone, almost the same amount of time as Facebook, which reached one billion active users in Oct. 2012 after launching in 2005. "In the last eight years you've come to YouTube to watch, share and fall in love with videos from all over the world," the YouTube team wrote in a blog post. "Tens of thousands of partners have created channels that have found and built businesses for passionate, engaged audiences." YouTube took the opportunity to boast about what the milestone really means. For starters, nearly one out of every two people on the Internet now visits YouTube, and its monthly viewership is the equivalent of roughly 10 Super Bowl audiences. "If YouTube were a country, we'd be the third largest in the world after China and India," the team said. Meanwhile, much of YouTube's viewership comes from Americans between 18 and 34 years old, a demographic Nielsen calls "Generation C" because of their connected behavior. The amount of time Gen C spends watching YouTube on their smartphones is up 74 percent from last year, according to a Wednesday post on Google's Agency Blog. Moreover, 67 percent of Gen C watches YouTube on two devices or more, compared to 53 percent of the general population. While viewers have been watching videos like crazy, the team at YouTube has been working behind the scenes to improve the service and find ways to monetize it. YouTube recently launched its Capture app for the iPad and iPad mini, letting users post videos from their Apple tablet. The site is also reportedly gearing up to introduce new paid subscription-only channels and a music-streaming service. ![]() via Technology - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNHAYNGsiVz25TG1E7SpJvOymUXfCw&url=http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2416883,00.asp | |||
