Sibal allays Internet slowdown fears - indiablooms

As Internet users worldwide reeled under the slowdown of web services following a massive cyber-attack on anti-spam company Spamhaus, touted as the biggest cyber attack in history, Sibal said India only faced minor disruptions.

"There was a very marginal impact. Only BSNL services were affected, that too in the south. North India largely remained unaffected. Private service providers were unaffected," Sibal was quoted as saying.

Asserting that there wasn't a need for an official advisory, Sibal said,"Advisories will only be issued if there are long term impacts. We are hoping that by evening we will be in a better position to understand the situation."

On Thursday, a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack (dubbed "bazooka") on Spamhaus from groups angry at being blacklisted for sending unwanted e-mails, slowed down Internet speeds worldwide.

The attack, whose bandwith at times peaked at more than 300 billion bits per second (300Gbps) - three times higher than the previous record attack of 100 Gbps, brought down a number of other websites.

The crisis was exacerbated by a break in one of the fiber optic cables in the Mediterranean off the Egyptian coast near Alexandria managed by telecoms provider Etisalat.
