Mercedes Reveals Six-Wheel Pickup for Driving Off-Road - Wall Street Journal (blog)

For people who thought the squared-off Mercedes-Benz G-Class sport-utility vehicle, also known as the gelandewagen or G-Wagen, was over-the-top, the German car makers latest show truck might make the standard "G" seem tame.

Mercedes unveiled what it calls a near-series show model, the G 63 AMG 6×6, which has a 544-horsepower turbocharged V8 engine, two rear axles and six-wheel drive. The term "near-series" means the company could easily build the vehicle on a production line. A company spokesman said if the truck were to ever enter production it would probably be built in significantly limited numbers.

Essentially a familiar G-Class, stretched to accommodate the second rear axle and configured as crew-cab pickup truck, the 6×6 is designed for extreme off-road driving on sand, rocks and other rough terrain. Mercedes calls the more than three-ton beast "the last word in forward-thrusting power far from the beaten track."

To boost its off-road performance, the 6×6 has a low-range gear ratio, five differential locks that can be operated on the move and portal axles that increase ground clearance. The vehicle also has a tire-pressure control system that adjustment of pressure in the vehicle's 37-inch tires while it is running. It can also ford water up to a meter deep.

But the company said the show vehicle is not modeled after Dakar-Rally style off-road racing machines. The G 63 AMG 6×6 comes with a range of luxury features including a richly appointed interior with four individual seats and a cargo bed lined with bamboo.
