Canon has just announced two new additions to its stable of dSLRs, the EOS 100D and EOS 700D.

The diminutive 100D, is probably the more interesting model, being small enough to fit within your palm. This shooter is the company's smallest dSLR to date, measuring 117 x 91 x 69mm, and is 28 percent lighter than the EOS 650D.

Housing the same 18-megapixel hybrid CMOS sensor found in the 650D and 700D, the 100D is fitted with a 3-inch capacitive LCD with multitouch capabilities. It also boasts an ISO range of 100 to 25,600, and shoots up to 4 frames-per-second (fps) in burst mode and records full-HD movies in 1080p. Besides a Digic 5 image processor, the dSLR is fitted with a new autofocus system which provides a wider focus area along with faster autofocus performance. In Movie Servo mode, users will also be able to track subjects and focus on them continuously during video capture.

The EOS 700D comes as an update to the EOS 650D and looks almost identical to its predecessor. Like the earlier iteration, the 700D uses an 18-megapixel hybrid CMOS sensor, Digic 5 image processor and phase-detect autofocus system. It also shares other specifications such as a 1,040k-dot, 3-inch articulating LCD screen and 1080p full-HD video recording.

While similarities do exist, the 700D comes with small improvements such as a new mode dial that turns 360 degrees, a better finish as well as the ability to preview and apply creative filters as you see fit in movie mode.

Announced with the new Canon dSLRs was a new EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens featuring a new lens design that ensures that the lens does not extend during focusing. The lens also features inbuilt image stabilization (up to 4 stops exposure), promising steadier videos along with quieter focusing performance which can give videographers clearer audio during video capture.

Available in April in the US, the Canon 100D and 700D bundled with the new 18-55mm STM kit zoom lens will retail at US$800 and US$900, respectively.

Though prices for the new dSLRs have yet to be confirmed, we hear that the camera will be available in Asia from mid-April.
