Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Grand: Specs comparison for Indian users - Northern Voices Online

Though there is no real comparison between the two, we are comparing Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Grand specs for our readers' in India.

Korean tech giant Samsung is betting big on the Indian market. Unlike Europe and United States where competition in the market is very tough, here in India Samsung is undisputed king of the smart-phone market. It has smart-phone of every shape, size, quality and price range. This is the reason for its almost complete dominance of smart-phone market in India.

It seems to understand the nature of market unlike many other players be it Apple or Ontario, Canada based Research in Motion (BlackBerry) and seems to be reaping the fruit. Though many reports have recently appeared as to how Apple has saw a 400 percent jump in revenue, but Apple may not match Samsung in India's conservative market for years to come, if its pricing policies don't change or it starts offering handset at subsidised pricing in association with telecom companies like it does in North America and Europe. If it is able to come up with such scheme, things may change for the better as it will change the rules of the game.

Here we compare two different smart-phones in almost different categories. Though it may look a bit insane to many but Galaxy Grand Duos and iPhone 5 may actually compete in the market for users' attention. Many new customers have chosen this phone instead of the expensive Apple iPhone 5 and even Samsung's Galaxy S3. Here we take a look at the two handsets.

As far as display quality is concerned, there is no competition between thte two. The Galaxy Grand sports a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen. The screen has a feeble resolution of 480 x 800 pixels with a density of just 187-ppi. It is when the new iPhone comes with a large 4-inch Retina display that has a good screen resolution of 1136×640 pixels at 326-ppi. The device also enjoys Corning's Gorilla Glass protection against scratches. Indeed, iPhone is the winner when it comes to display, but remember the Grand is only a low-price device.

In processor too iPhone 5 beats the Grand hands down. Beneath the cover, the Samsung phone has a 1.2GHz dual core processor, a standard graphical processor and 1GB of RAM. Meanwhile, the new iPhone has a more powerful Apple A6 chipset that comes inside a 1.2GHz dual core processor, which is backed by a PowerVR GPU and 1GB of RAM. In comparison, iPhone 5 is the winner in this category as well.
Both devices run on different operating systems. The devices work on different platforms. The Samsung phone is up with Google's Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which is the version of the software available for third party developers of Google right now. It is when the new iPhone has Apple's latest iOS version called the iOS 6. Because of this, the devices are entirely different in operating system and their look, feel and features.

As far as camera is concerned, both come with 8 mega pixel camera. The Galaxy Grand sports an 8MP rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and other advanced features. It also has a 2MP front facing camera for the purpose of making video chat and taking self-portraits. On the other hand, the iPhone 5 also has the same rear camera in megapixels, but it is an innovative iSight camera that highlights features like Panorama and HD Video recording. It also has a 1.2MP front camera for video chatting.

iPhone 5 beats Galaxy Grand hands down in built in memory too. Samsung offers the Galaxy Grand with 8GB of built in memory. It also has an option for expanding memory up to 64GB through a microSD sot. Apple iPhone 5, like its predecessor, comes in three internal memory variants, on the other hand. They are 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Apart from these integrated options, you have no scope to expand memory. Apple is against the philosophy of adding microSD slots to its products. The Galaxy Grand has a better 2100mAh Li-Ion battery than iPhone 5's non-removable Li-Po 1440 mAh battery. Both the devices have good battery backup, however. But, you can't remove the battery of iPhone so that you can't keep a spare battery for longer life during trips.

When it comes to price, there is a huge difference between the two. Grand comes with less than half price of Apple's iPhone 5. In Indian market, you can buy the Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos for just Rs. 21,000. But, in case of the new iPhone, you will have to spend around Rs. 40,000 to get a fresh version. This huge difference is the thing that gives some breathing space to Samsung's Galaxy Grand against a very gifted and well endowed opponent.
