![]() (Credit: Stephen Shankland/CNET) Andy Rubin is a hero. He made Android, and everything about Android is branded Rubin to the geek world. Android is a heroic achievement, in a few short years destroying Apple's lead and now leading the way for smartphone operating systems. Now this hero has won, and as with all heroes, when they win, they seek new battles. So he's handing over the reins of Android to one Sundar Pichai. I wrote about him a few years ago, mainly about his condescending tone bordering on rudeness during the Chrome OS Webcast in 2009. It's a far cry from Vic Gundotra's stellar introduction for Android. Pichai oversees the Chrome and Chrome OS products at Google. I have to say the latter product has failed to impress so far, quite unlike the browser it is based on, which was first created by a team working under Brian Rakowski. In his email to Android partners, Rubin is right to say that he needed the confidence in his strong management team and Android's strength to hand over Android. In any case, I hope that Andy Rubin does something great in his new role at Google. And I hope the Android team will be able to grow stronger organically with direction from the existing strong management team. Michael Tan is part of CNET Asia's regional blogger network. About the authorWith his grandpa building a tapioca processing plant from scratch, and his dad a spook Engineer, even Michael Tan's formal title as General Legal counsel for his company (tech product distributor Convergent) can't overcome his genetic predeposition for tech. Through the years, his mere presence would make tech work--Apple II copy programs would just manage to make the one and only workable copy, QEMM386.SYS would yield that final 3KB needed for Wing Commander and that sticky Fujifilm X100 shutter would affect everyone but him. Leading a technically charmed life, it's no wonder he goes through life with rose tinted glasses when tech is concerned. It just works for him.
