Nokia announces four new phones at MWC 2013 - CNET

Nokia held its Mobile World Congress presser in Barcelona, Spain, today and unveiled four new lower-tier devices, which come with features usually found in its higher-end handsets.

Two non-LTE Lumia smartphones--the 720 and 520--made their debut. Both can be used with gloves, as they sport the same super-sensitive touch display technology found on the top-of-the-line Lumia 920.

The 720 looks to be a midrange handset, with a 4.3-inch curved laminated display for better readability and wider viewing angles. Its rear-facing 6.7-megapixel camera is paired with Carl Zeiss optics with a bright F1.9 aperture. Similar to the HTC Windows Phone 8X, the 720's front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera has a wide-angle lens to squeeze more friends in your self-shots.

With an optional cover, the 720--which uses the same battery as the Lumia 920--can be charged wirelessly. (The Finland-based company even announced a new wireless charging car holder accessory for its compatible Lumia smartphones.) The Nokia smartphone will roll out this quarter in Asia first, followed by the rest of the world, at an estimated price of 249 euros (US$329).

Next is the Lumia 520, which sports a smaller 4-inch display. Priced at an estimated 139 euros (US$184), the Lumia 520 is claimed to be Nokia's "most affordable Windows Phone 8" handset. Although an entry-level handset, the 520 comes with the same digital camera lenses as the Lumia 920, as well as features such as smart shoot, cinemagraphs, panorama mode and filters.

Unfortunately, you won't get wireless charging capabilities here, although its colorful shells are swappable. Available in yellow, white, cyan and red options, the 520 will be available in Hong Kong and Vietnam first in Q1, followed by the rest of the world.

Nokia has also announced that China Mobile will launch localized variants of the Lumia 520 and 720.

If you're happy with a feature phone, Nokia has two new additions which cost under US$100. The Nokia 301 comes in a range of colors--cyan, magenta, yellow, white and black--and in single-SIM and dual-SIM versions. Nokia's aim is to bring photographic innovations to the lower tier models, so the 301's camera takes 3-5 shots in sequential shot mode, has a panorama mode, and a voice-guided self-portrait assistant.

Priced at just 65 euros (US$86), the Nokia 301 will roll out globally in Q2 this year.

Finally, there's the 105, which is claimed by Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia's executive vice-president of design, as "the entry point to the Nokia brand". At just 15 euros (US$20), the company is practically giving it away. Available in Q1, the 105 comes in either cyan or black. This phone seems like it is suited for the outdoors, as the phone packs a flashlight and splash- and dust-proof keyboard. It's also claimed to have an "amazing" battery life, with standby time rated at up to 35 days.

Sadly, there was no sign of the widely rumored EOS PureView smartphone, which was alleged to contain the same massive 41-megapixel camera sensor as the 808 PureView. When asked about it during the Q&A session, CEO Stephen Elop deftly sidestepped the question by giving a teaser: "There's so much more ahead in 2013." Of course, that may not mean that the EOS PureView will actually materialize because, as Nokia has insisted PureView isn't so much a technology but, according to Elop, a "photographic experience".

Stay tuned for our hands-on impressions of the Lumia handsets.
