Microsoft AppFest 2013 in India set to create another record - Northern Voices Online (blog)

It is going to be memorable for techies across the country. Microsoft AppFest 2013 in India set to create another record of sorts

(NVONews.Com): Microsoft is really keen to make a mark with its latest Windows platform, available for computers, mobile and tablet devices. Microsoft will be holding an AppFest in India next week which will get students together and encourage them to develop apps for Windows.

With Microsoft's previous AppFest setting a Guiness World Record for an 18 hour long coding sessions and a huge turnout of around 2,500 developers at a single venue for the same event, the company is back to recreate the excitement.

Microsoft India will conduct an application development fest on February 26, which is expected to be attended by more than 10,000 students from around 50 engineering and technology institutes. The Microsoft AppFest will be conducted at more than 50 centres simultaneously around the country. At the fest, Microsoft will mentor and supervise the students in their development of apps for the different Windows platform. Microsoft will provide the students with software such as Visual Studio and Windows 8 and Windows Store registration for free, to ease the process of app development. The workshop will be conducted by Microsoft professionals as well as Microsoft Student Partners. The apps will be designed and crafted so that they can later be made available on the Microsoft Windows App Store.

Microsoft will focus on broad serving categories for the app development, such as, games, social-networking applications and others.

Microsoft regularly conducts such workshop under Microsoft DreamSpark initiative. Microsoft feels that such programs would help students stay at par with the continuously evolving technologies in the world and also boost employment.  "In addition to submitting the apps for evaluation for a chance to get on the Microsoft Store, the training and experience received via this program will boost the students' employability, and create a more capable developer ecosystem in the country," says a Microsoft statement.

Microsoft will ask all the AppFest participants to submit their applications online and then validate them. If successful, the apps will be made available on the Microsoft Windows Store.

Microsoft is keen to expand its app store amid growing competition from rival smartphone platforms such as Apple's iOS and Google's Android. Microsoft latest Windows 8 OS for PC and tablets and Windows Phone OS for smartphones are interesting on feature but lack significantly on the choice of apps offered. The app strapped company is looking for ways to populate its database with interesting and exclusive apps for the Windows platform. With a lot of content consumption and the trend expected to only rise in the future, apps have come to be one of the most crucial factor in deciding the fate of a smartphone or tablet device.
