Google Nexus X handset will flourish, but Facebook Phone will never come - Northern Voices Online

Social networking giant is competing with search giant in many respects. But while Google's Nexus X handset will flourish, Facebook Phone will never come

Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has again denied the hugely-hyped Facebook phone rumors. This time, Zuckerberg has made a strong rebuff to ensure that there wouldn't be any more rumors further. Talking at the company's fourth quarter earning call on Wednesday, he said that it didn't plan any phone since it could always provide better strategies and facilities for all other platforms that Facebook users relied.

The Facebook CEO simply means that the company has special apps for all mobiles, tablets and other platforms. "The big thing for us is that we have 1 billion people using our products, and we need to make Facebook really good across all of the devices they use, and we're going to keep on pushing to get more integrated with the system," Zuckerberg said.

Well, Zuckerberg's comment makes sense. Facebook is primarily a social networking site. It is not a tech firm to develop hardware. It enjoys more than one billion members across the world and a big share of its users relies on phones and tablets to surf the site. Facebook has nice apps for all key mobile platforms like Apple iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Hence, Facebook really doesn't need to develop a device to let users access the site.

"When Facebook is a product that people are spending almost 20 percent of their time or more on phones using, it really should be, and I think people want it to be, very integrated into all of the different devices that they have, and that's what we're going to focus on," the Facebook CEO added. He also exposed that around 20 percent of the firm's advertising revenue comes from mobile space.

Facebook Phone Rumors
Rumors regarding Facebook phone have been there for a long time. Even recently, some sources claimed that the firm would immediately roll out the handset with special features for using Facebook. Early this month, TechCrunch columnist MG Siegler reported that Facebook was about to uncover its phone. "Multiple sources have told us that they expect some sort of Facebook Phone" he wrote.

Reports even stated that Facebook would develop an own Facebook OS for the device. Like Android, it would be available for other handsets as well. But, the reality is just opposite. Facebook CEO has been denying the news for a while. Talking at a TechCrunch event in September itself, Mr. Mark had denied the chance for an own tablet.

"It's a juicy thing to say we're building a phone, which is why people want to write about it. But it's so clearly the wrong strategy for us," he said then. As of now, Zuckerberg has again reiterated his argument. Now it is clear that Facebook is not really going to develop a Facebook phone and it is a dead end. It will focus its strategy in expanding compatibility of its products with the existing and popular mobile platforms.

Facebook Messenger Update
In the meantime, Facebook has recently revamped Facebook Messenger for iPhone. The new app adds free calling capability via Wi-Fi between Facebook iDevice users. That is, users can now make free calls using Facebook Messenger via Wi-Fi. It is a great feature since Facebook has the most number of users compared to any social media platforms. Users can easily use Facebook on iOS to make free video calls, apart from going for options like Skype and Truphone.

Facebook Graph Search
Facebook early January announced its much-talked-about Graph Search, a tool for searching Facebook data previously shared by its users. It is a "privacy-aware" search engine that can scour the content once publicly shared by various Facebook users, said Zuckerberg.  As CNET put it down, "every piece of content has its "own audience" being that most of this content isn't public." In other words, Facebook Graph is not to compete with other regular search engines like Google or Yahoo.
