BlackBerry Z10 priced Rs 43490 in India, killing a great handset - Northern Voices Online

BlackBerry Z10 has been priced Rs 43,490 in India. I am sure every company needs to take a lesson from BlackBerry in how to kill a great handset

Everyone is asking one single question. Can BlackBerry Z10 revive the fortunes of the Ontario, Canada based company. The handset is really cool, but has it the capabilities to keep the world glued to it while other smart-phone majors continue launching better and better handsets.

With recent introduction of LG's Optimus G Pro and another even better handset in the form of HTC One, the smart-phone market is changing with every passing day. The sort of improvements we are seeing in their display quality, processing power, camera quality and of course internal storage options indicate a shift from the technology we have right now to the next generation. And with BlackBerry launching a handset that despite being good one didn't come up with anything new, it may not be able to compete with market leaders more particularly when Samsung is understood to introduce its next gen flagship handset next months.

Pricing is an area that will also make things difficult for the Canadian company. In India the handset was priced at Rs 43,490, certainly more than what it is worth. This high pricing comes as a shock more so when better handsets are available in the market for far less amount. This came as a shock more particularly given the fact that since its launch only 300000 handsets of BlackBerry Z10 have been shipped. Please don't compare it with iPhone frenzy. It took just three days for the company to sell as many as five million handsets.

We were expecting India to be high on BlackBerry priorities, but the pricing will not help the company. At such a steep price the handset is not going to attract many takers in an economy with a huge middle class population. A Reuters report while quoting Melissa Chau of IDC in Singapore emphasises that BlackBerry is expecting a good response from India and Indonesia. "It's clear that not only are India and Indonesia among the largest markets but in terms of future smartphone growth, they're amongst the ones with the most potential…But the two devices that have been launched are not well aligned to the needs of these two markets", says Melissa Chau.

Though the handset may seem like pricier, but it is paisa wasool for diehard BlackBerry fans. Z10 is a compact device that comes with a screen size of 4.2-inches it is closer to iPhone 5 in size and is easily dwarfed by the big high-end Android phones. The handset is powered by a dual-core processor running at 1.5GHz. It has a 8 mega pixels primary camera and a screen resolution of 1280×768 pixels. The pricing may make an otherwise great handset flop in a market that loves everything BlackBerry.
