Faizan Nizami After dwindling sales, tanking stocks and misplaced confidence in a tablet, BlackBerry has finally learnt its lesson — the world of smartphones now flourishes in dazzling touchscreens and intuitive user interfaces. The onset of Apple iPhone and Android-based cellphones has given BlackBerry a run for its money over these years. However, the company famous for its Messenger service (Blackberry Messenger aka BBM) seeks to go head-to-head with the competition with its newly launched operating system, the BlackBerry 10 (BB10). The new OS was showcased with much fanfare but will it stand the test of time? Erstwhile Research in Motion is now formally BlackBerry. As the company shed its previous name it also seeks to do away with the steep erosion of its performance and customer base, pinning its hopes upon two of its new smartphones — BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10. According to CEO Thorsten Heins, the release date for the BlackBerry Q10 — the BB10 smartphone with a physical keyboard — has been shifted to April. But the BlackBerry Z10 is the new flagship phone for the company; and a smartphone which ardent BlackBerry users are raring to get a crack at. Let's take a look at some of the features on Z10. Hardware: The main hardware specs for the Z10 include a 4.2-inch display with a 1280 x 768 resolution, screen density of 365 pixels per inch, a fine Qualcomm dual-core 1.5-GHz processor with 2GB RAM, 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel front camera, 16GB of storage, connectivity options like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC, MicroSD slot for expansion and a removable battery. Keyboard The stock keyboard on the Z10 is fluid and responsive. Unlike keyboard options on previous phones like Bold and the Curve, BlackBerry has done a fine job with near-perfect word predictions, combined with accuracy and with little or no editing. It won't take a while getting used to as the new fined tuned keyboard makes it easy to grasp and use. The BlackBerry Z10 is the first device from BlackBerry which will not carry the QWERTY keyboard, a shift from what the company has earlier utilised. But users who still have a thing for QWERTY keyboards need not fear as the BlackBerry Q10 is equipped with a physical keyboard. BlackBerry Hub The BlackBerry Hub is the messaging centre on the Z10. Here all communication details, texts, instant messages, social networking accounts and emails are funneled into one space and form the core of the messaging centre. It's a efficient way of letting users get complete control of all their messages making it absolutely convenient for them to customise and sort what they wish to see and use and what they can do without. Screen sharing The neat little feature that was showcased during the BB10 launch in New York makes it fun to share screens with each other on a BB10 devices via BlackBerry Messenger. This could be a whole new segment for the company unlike the BlackBerrys of yore which had to do without this fine feature. Users can share space and allow each other to get a glimpse of what the other person is doing is something very new to the smartphone world. BlackBerry Browser With the new Z10, the browser gets a refreshing update. Browsing feels seamless and zippy as the browser supports mobile-optimised and fully-loaded HTML websites with no hassle. Multiple pages and private browsing are some of the features users will get a liking to. Here are some of the features you will get to experience on the BlackBerry 10 OS: BlackBerry 10 The most interesting facet of the BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 is that it is compatible with Android and iOS devices. The software, which is available for download now, is available to government agencies and corporate clients. BlackBerry 10 will come with a recently rebranded BlackBerry App World just like 'BlackBerry World', for new apps, music and other digital content. The Canadian firm is launching the BlackBerry 10 operated devices with many interesting multi-tasking options. BlackBerry Hub is one such cool feature that lets the user access often-used functions like messages, notifications, contacts and calendars without switching between apps. Similarly, BlackBerry Flow is a feature that enables users to go back to what they were doing and return to their current task with a simple swipe of the screen. Now, there will be no need to go to the home screen to view the running apps. Another feature to boast about is BlackBerry Balance which will help easily switch between work apps and personal apps. A feature that shows RIM is finally catching up with the changing tech trend is video calling.
