Half of all the people and businesses investing in new mobile technology in the next year will choose smartphones, making this the largest segment in the market by 2014.

New figures from ABI Research show 50 per cent of all handset shipments will be smartphones by next year, while some 2.4 billion smartphones will account for 69 per cent of the sector by 2018, indicating the devices are the future for the majority.

Senior analyst Michael Morgan said Samsung is the brand to keep an eye on in the future, as it will extend its lead beyond Apple. While the US manufacturer's market share is likely to peak at 22 per cent in 2013, Samsung is set for further growth having already expanded from eight per cent of the market to 30 per cent in 2012.

Apple's market share will remain relatively flat all the way through to 2018, suggesting Samsung smartphones are to be the most in demand of all.

Jeff Orr, senior practice director at the research body, said: "W ith the successful launch of the iPhone 5 and competing long-term evolution (LTE) handsets from other leading original equipment manufacturers, LTE handsets will be found in the hands of many consumers who do not even have access to LTE networks. Apple is demonstrating to the market that LTE is not the only reason to buy a premium handset."

Upon investing in a range of mobile handsets, firms can also roll out a link to their chosen mobile VoIP platform. This will ensure they are able to make cheap IP calls from almost any location, which can prove to be a considerable business benefit.

Mobile VoIP is becoming more and more important to companies, as it allows bosses and staff to stay in touch wherever they are each working from. It can therefore be an extremely shrewd investment at any time, but particularly so when combined with the rollout of a new set of smartphones to be used by professionals.
