| Despite putting Delhi traffic police's best foot forward to enforcement of traffic rules and awareness campaigns, the Capital has witnessed only marginal decrease in the number of road casualties last year. Road fatalities have decreased by around 13.26 per cent during last year in comparison of 2011 while number of injured decreased by marginal 3.27per cent. According to figure complied by the traffic police, from a high of 2,014 deaths in 1943 fatal accidents in 2000, last year there was 1,786 deaths in 1,714 fatal accidents. However, during the period of 2001 to 2010 number of deaths fluctuated between 1,842 and 2,153, while the number of fatal accidents varied between 1,768 and 2,104. According to police, an emphasis on pedestrian safety, efforts to curb speeding and consistent crackdowns on drunk drivers and commercial vehicles helped bring the figure down. During the annual Press conference on Friday, police said drunken driving was the most important reason behind road mishaps. In 2012, traffic police had prosecuted 23,829 persons for drunken driving as against 18,073 persecuted in 2011. Number of persons imprisoned for drunken driving had also increased from 2,869 in 2011 to 6,578 in 2012. However, despite increase in prosecution in drunken driving cases, suspension of driving licences has decreased to 986 in 2012 from 2,179 in 2011. Number of persons penaliased has raised to 16,705 in 2012 from 12,549 in 2011. Traffic police prosecuted 30,497 for over speeding during last year. Prosecution for other traffic norms violation also increased last year. Traffic cops had prosecuted 3, 29,185 persons for driving two-wheelers without helmet and 57,931 person for riding pillion without helmet. Issuing of challans for not wearing seat belt has also increased from 2, 24,368 in 2011 to 3, 13,419 in last year. Claiming substantial increase in prosecution against commercial vehicle, traffic police had issued 10,18,652 challans. Police ambitious plan to implementing Intelligent Traffic system (ITS) may be operational by this year. The consultant for the ITS expected to be in place by March, 2013. Another important plan to keep the record of all traffic violation against defaulting drivers and vehicles, police set to make e-challan system operation by March 2013. By the end of this month e-challan system is likely to be made functional in some part of the Capital.
