VW drives in a hatckback with SUV feel@Rs8L - mydigitalfc.com

Volkswagen, Europe's largest carmaker by sales, launched on Thursday the new premium sporty hatchback Cross Polo to boost its sluggish sales in India ahead of the forthcoming festive season.

"The Polo is an important car line in the Indian portfolio and with ongoing updates, we keep it relevant and exciting for our customers," Arvind Saxena, managing director, Volkswagen passenger cars at Volkswagen Group India, said. He said the Cross Polo has been created for those looking at a premium hatchback in a sporty crossover style.

The new Cross Polo, a more rugged version based on the standard Polo, has a 1.2-litre diesel engine and a five-speed manual gearbox, It is priced at Rs 7.75 lakh (ex-Delhi showroom). The same engine also powers the standard Polo. The Cross Polo would be offered in three different colours — flash red, reflex silver and deep black pearl. It is available from August 23.

The hatchback sports a chrome accented grille, new front and rear bumpers with silver scuff plates, smoked headlamps, black side cladding, black moulded covers for the wheel arches, silver roof rails and wing mirrors, and Cross Polo decals on the rear doors. The exterior features are aimed at giving the car a crossover appeal.

"The Cross Polo is mechanically the same Polo fitted with a rough road package to lure SUV-loving Indians," Shrawan Raja, auto analyst and editor of IndianAutosBlog.com told Financial Chronicle.

The exterior enrichment is aimed at giving the car the style of a crossover, but it stops short of turning into one, he said.

"Skoda Fabia Scout, which was relaunched along similar lines in April 2012, had a feeble effect on the sales of Fabia. However, the parent company Volkswagen would look to piggyback on the SUV hype in today's market to push sales of the Polo higher," Raja said.

In the April-June quarter, the company sold a total of 34,274 units, which was about 1,500 units lesser than in the same period last year, a company official said. He said last month it clocked a flat growth at 4,739 units.

Volkswagen manufactures the Polo and Vento cars at its Chakan facility near Pune, while Jetta, and Passat models are assembled at its plant at Aurangabad in Maharashtra. Its Touareg brand is imported from Germany.
